BAY AREA STRING QUARTET HONORED WITH SECOND CONSECUTIVE GRAMMY© NOMINATION

"Whirled Chamber Music" CD Is Nominated For Best Classical Crossover CD of the Year

Quartet San Francisco received a Grammy® nomination yesterday for their latest ViolinJazz Recordings CD, Whirled Chamber Music. The CD, which focuses on the music of Raymond Scott in celebration of his centennial, was nominated in the Classical Crossover category.

The quartet's previous CD, Látigo, was similarly honored in 2006. In addition, Látigo, a recording of tango and Latin arrangements for string quartet, was nominated as Best Engineered Classical CD. Veteran engineer Leslie Ann Jones was at the controls for both CDs, at Skywalker Ranch in Nicasio , CA .

"Last year's nominations were definitely affirming of the years of work we have invested in developing this new and exciting form of crossover music," says first violinist Jeremy Cohen , the group's principal arranger. "This year's nomination tells us that discerning audiences are paying careful attention to our work, noticing our contribution to this expanding area of music. We are hugely honored to receive this Grammy® nomination!"

Adds Cohen: " Whirled Chamber Music reflects our passion for playing the music of our time--and playing the music we love for the sheer joy of it."

Quartet San Francisco 's personnel, in addition to Cohen, includes Kayo Miki (violin), Emily Onderdonk (viola), and Joel Cohen (cello). The group was established in 2001.

Other honorees in the Best Classical Crossover Album category are: Thomas Quasthoff, The Jazz Album: Watch What Happens; Turtle Island Quartet, A Love Supreme: The Legacy of John Coltrane; Mormon Tabernacle Choir/Orchestra at Temple Square, Craig Jessop & Mack Wilberg, conductors, Spirit of the Season; The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Wolfgang's Big Night Out.

Whirled Chamber Music was produced by Andrea Liguori ; Jeremy Cohen served as executive producer. Judy Kirschner was the mixing engineer, and Andre Zweers the editing engineer. The CD was mastered by Bernie Grundman.

Quartet San Francisco: Whirled Chamber Music

"After snapping up two Grammy® nominations last year for Látigo, Quartet San Francisco returns with a fascinating album of musical oddities, including seven cuts by the late Raymond Scott. You may not recognize the name, or titles such as 'Peter Tambourine' and 'The Penguin,' but you'll know the music, beautifully reinvented by the Bay Area quartet." -- David Wiegand, San Francisco Chronicle

"The pitch-perfect Quartet San Francisco applies itself to a wider range of material [than on Látigo], compiling what could easily be the most cheerful and brilliantly-executed release of 2007." -- Dr. Judith Schlesinger, AllAboutJazz.com

"The playing is superb, with every song taking unpredictable turns, leaving the listener smiling."
-- Ken Dryden, All About Jazz NY

"The Quartet San Francisco comes out of the chamber with strings blazing. . . . There's not a dull moment on the disc. . . . As violinist Jeremy Cohen says, 'When the music says swing, we swing. When [it] says groove, we groove.' And do they ever!" -- Miles Jordan, Chico (CA) News & Review
